In 1874, on the banks of the River Lagan, St Malachy’s Christian Brothers School first opened its doors. The Christian Brothers had received a donation and instructions to open the school by Margaret Magill after she had passed. Magill wished for the school to be set up for the Christian Brothers to educate the children of the dockers, sailors and those who worked the barges on the Lagan. The school was designed by Alexander MacAllister, a leading architect in Victorian Belfast.
In the aftermath of the WWII, the school came under pressure to close as it was not within close proximity to Belfast’s residential areas. The school closed its doors in 1972. The building briefly became occupied by a clothing firm who converted the building into a warehouse. In 1980 the building underwent a major renovation and the interior was stripped and converted into a commercial space and became a solicitors.
Skinworks took over occupancy in 2014. Although the original interior has been completely removed the current inhabitants have decorated the space to commemorate its original style. With impressive stained glass graphics and gothic furniture, Skinworks is celebrating the buildings history.

We operate mainly by appointments, but it is always worth calling into the studio to check if we have the availability for walk-ins.
We have individual artists spaces throughout both levels of the building including a completely private, purpose built piercing room; in which our fully trained body piercers operate to the highest standards of quality and hygiene.
Every piercing is performed with single-use, pre-packaged needles which are carefully disposed of after each procedure. All our instruments are put through a sterilisation process in our state of the art sterilising room after every use.
We will happily take walk-ins but appointments are available on request.
